Tokyo Station’s coin lockers are broadly divided into two categories: inside the ticket gates and outside the ticket gates. Understanding each area’s characteristics allows you to make the best choice based on your travel route.

Locker Distribution by Area
The majority of lockers are concentrated on the Yaesu side, which sees heavy Shinkansen traffic. The Marunouchi side has fewer lockers, so competition tends to be higher. Lockers inside the ticket gates (around Gransta) are a hidden gem, but note that once you exit the gates, you can’t re-enter without a ticket.
Size and Type Breakdown
Large lockers (suitcase-sized) account for only about 20% of total lockers and are relatively scarce. If you have large luggage, it may be smarter to head straight to a staffed storage counter rather than hunting for a big locker.
Yaesu Area (For Shinkansen & Highway Bus Riders)
The Yaesu side is adjacent to the Tokaido Shinkansen gates and the JR highway bus terminal — one of the busiest areas in the station. Lockers here are branded with animal stickers to make them easier to spot.

Yaesu Underground (B1F)
The underground area is adjacent to commercial facilities like Tokyo Character Street and Ramen Street, making it very popular with tourists.
- Yaesu Underground Central Gate (Whale): 28 small, 21 medium, 8 large lockers. 400 yen–800 yen. Turn left immediately after exiting the gate to find them.
- Near Gransta Yaesu: Multi-function lockers are scattered near the restaurant area, making it great for quick storage during a meal.

The Marunouchi side, home to the iconic red-brick station building, is somewhat calmer than the Yaesu side, though demand for large lockers remains high.

Marunouchi Underground (B1F)
Located along the transfer route to the Tokyo Metro Marunouchi Line, with a large concentration of lockers.
- Near Dourin no Hiroba (Steam Locomotive Plaza): A massive locker bank — 81 small, 56 medium, 29 large. Standard pricing of ¥400–¥700.
- Marunouchi Underground North Exit corridor: In front of Kurobei Yokocho. Features 50 small, 39 medium, 60 large — notably a high proportion of large (L) size lockers.
Nihonbashi Exit Area (Hidden Gem)
Located at the northeast end of Tokyo Station, the Nihonbashi Exit sees far less foot traffic than other gates, making it a reliable spot to find available lockers even when other areas are full.
- Shinkansen Nihonbashi Gate — in front of gate (Koala): 21 lockers each of S, M, and L sizes — a well-balanced spread.
- Shinkansen Nihonbashi Gate — corridor (Rabbit): Accepts both cash and IC cards. Available from 4:00 AM to 1:30 AM (next day).
Gransta Tokyo Area (Inside Gates, B1F — Up to ~1,000 Lockers, the Largest Inside the Station)
Most JR and Shinkansen passengers use the ground floor, but heading down to B1F reveals a vast array of restaurants and souvenir shops — and tucked among them is a massive coin locker zone with approximately 1,000 lockers in various sizes and styles. Some can even be reserved in advance.
Reserve a locker near the GranSta Tokyo area (BF 1)
Keiyo Line / Sobu Line Area (B3F & B4F — The Last Resort)
When all surface-level and B1F lockers are taken, the deep underground floors are your backup plan.
- B4F — Near Sobu/Yokosuka Line platforms: The single easiest place in the entire station to find an available locker — 334 small, 213 medium, 457 large. It takes a while to get there, but it’s the ultimate fallback when you’re out of options everywhere else.
- B3F — Keiyo Line Concourse: Heavily used by visitors heading to Tokyo Disney Resort, but still tends to have more availability than the upper floors.

Same-Day Hotel Delivery (The Secret to Hands-Free Sightseeing)
This delivery service is what Corritrip proposes to solve the challenges faced by businesses (congestion within stations).
- How it works: Drop off your luggage in the morning, and it will be delivered to your partner hotel in Tokyo’s 23 wards or Urayasu by approximately 6–7 PM that evening.
- Benefits: Travelers can skip the detour to the hotel and start sightseeing immediately upon arrival. For the station, it also reduces congestion and prevents accidents caused by large suitcases being dragged through corridors.

The “Calendar Day” Billing Trap
Most Japanese station coin lockers charge by calendar day (reset at midnight or 2 AM), not by 24-hour periods.
- Example: If you store your bag at 11 PM and pick it up at 8 AM — just 9 hours later — you’ll be charged for 2 days because the date changed. At Tokyo Station, the most common type adds a fee at 2 AM.
Two important notes about inside-the-gate lockers:
- To retrieve your luggage, you must re-enter through the ticket gates. Make sure your itinerary allows for this.
- Tokyo Station is vast and the scenery can look similar throughout — so note your locker’s exact location carefully to avoid getting lost. Take a photo of the locker’s location and surroundings, and keep your receipt safe — it contains important information including the locker’s location. Photographing your receipt is also a good idea.
The Shinkansen “Oversized Luggage” Rules
On the Tokaido, Sanyo, and Kyushu Shinkansen lines, bags with a total of three dimensions exceeding 160 cm require advance reservation of a designated storage space.
- Corritrip’s advice: If you couldn’t reserve a seat with an oversized luggage space, bringing it on board without a reservation incurs a ¥1,000 surcharge. In that case, the smartest and most economical solution is to have your bag delivered to your accommodation via Tokyo Station’s staffed storage counter.
Payment Methods
Modern lockers accept IC cards (Suica, PASMO), as well as PayPay, WeChat Pay, Alipay, and credit cards. However, some older machines in the underground areas only accept ¥100 coins — so carrying some small change is a good idea just in case.
