Three reasons why traveling by highway bus in Japan is so fun.
Reason2 You can buy souvenirs and sample local delicacies at highway service areas

Stopping at service areas is one fun aspect of traveling by highway bus in Japan. Bus journeys that take more than two hours will always stop once for a toilet break at a service area (and twice for journeys of more than four hours).

At service areas in Japan there is a vast array of souvenirs and local delicacies. You have to be quick though because the break time is usually only around 10 to 15 minutes. For food, it might be best to choose something you can take back to the bus to enjoy without rushing.
