Decide your destination and drop-off stop in advance

Awaji Island has many bus stops. For Nijigen no Mori, head toward “Prefectural Awajishima Park.” For the Uzushio Cruise, head to “Fukura.” For west coast cafés, look for stops like “Nojima Oishi” or “Shiawase no Pancake Mae.”

>>>Shinki Bus Official Website

2. Check the return bus schedule first

This is especially important for day trips. Some areas — particularly the west coast and southern Awaji — have limited return services. Check the last bus time before you start sightseeing.

>>>Shinki Bus Official Website

3. Account for full buses and cancellations

Some services are capacity-controlled. On weekends, holidays, or event days, popular buses may be full. Also, strong winds or typhoons may affect bridge operations and bus schedules. Check the operator’s website before heading out.

>>>Shinki Bus Official Website

4. Prepare IC cards and cash

Payment methods vary by route and operator. While IC cards (like Suica or ICOCA) are accepted on some routes, this is not universal. Foreign travelers are advised to carry cash as a backup.

Returning: Get Off at Kosoku Maiko and Walk to JR Maiko Station

The return journey is the reverse of the outbound route. Please take a train to JR Maiko Station, then transfer to an expressway bus at Kosoku Maiko Bus Stop.

Bus stop names are often displayed only in Japanese, so save the following on your smartphone before you go:

淡路IC (Awaji IC)

県立淡路島公園 (Prefectural Awajishima Park)

岩屋 (Iwaya)

野島大石 (Nojima Oishi)

福良 (Fukura)

洲本バスセンター (Sumoto Bus Center)

幸せのパンケーキ前 (A Happy Pancake)

Also check the return bus times and stops on Google Maps or the operator’s timetable before leaving for sightseeing.

>>>Shinki Bus Official Website

FAQ

Can I get to Awaji Island by train only?

No. There are no train stations on Awaji Island. The standard route from Osaka/Shin-Osaka is to take the JR train to Maiko Station, then board an expressway bus from Kosoku Maiko.

Is Maiko Station or Sannomiya more convenient from Osaka?

If you’re coming from Osaka by train and want to get as close to Awaji Island as possible on the mainland, Maiko Station is the better transfer point. Note that most expressway buses headed for Awaji Island stop at Kosoku Maiko anyway. Direct buses from Sannomiya are also available.

Does the Shinkaisoku stop at JR Maiko Station?

No, it does not. You’ll need to take a Rapid or Local train to reach Maiko, or transfer at Sannomiya, Kobe, or Akashi.

Is Kosoku Maiko Bus Stop easy to find for first-timers?

The signage is helpful, but allow extra time if it’s your first visit. The stop is on the expressway — structurally different from a typical bus stop. Plan for 10–15 minutes between your train arrival and bus departure.

What are the best day-trip destinations on Awaji Island?

For first-timers: Awaji IC / Awaji Highway Oasis area, Nijigen no Mori, North Awaji West Coast, or the Uzushio Cruise at Fukura. For a shorter visit, stick to the Awaji IC area; for a full day, Nijigen no Mori or Fukura are great choices.

Awaji Island Day Trip Model Course by Highway Bus and Local Bus

Can I enjoy Awaji Island without a rental car?

Yes, if you plan your spots in advance. Awaji Island has no railways, and bus frequency varies by area. For free-roaming across multiple spots, a car is more convenient — but if you pick a specific destination (Nijigen no Mori, a west coast café, or Fukura), a train + bus combination works perfectly for a day trip.

Awaji Island Day Trip Model Course by Highway Bus and Local Bus

Summary: Head to Maiko Station First

To reach Awaji Island from Osaka or Shin-Osaka for a day trip, the clearest route is to take the JR train to Maiko Station, then walk to Kosoku Maiko Bus Stop and board an expressway bus.

Think of it as combining train and expressway bus, rather than a pure “train journey” to the island.

Remember: the Shinkaisoku does not stop at Maiko. Use a Rapid or Local train, or transfer at Sannomiya, Kobe, or Akashi.

From Kosoku Maiko, you’ll cross the Akashi Kaikyo Bridge with sweeping sea views and land on Awaji Island in minutes.

Choose your destination — Nijigen no Mori, the west coast, Sumoto, or Fukura — and confirm your bus stop and timetable before you depart.

Even staying in Osaka, Awaji Island makes a fantastic day trip.
